What's Needed?
What do I need to buy for a new Scout?
Joining Scouts is an exciting time. Figuring out what you need to buy for a new scout can be a little intimidating. The staff at any scout shop are very helpful and will guide you through the process of getting the essentials. You can also print this list for easy reference. At a minimum, our troop expects each scout to have the following:
- Official BSA uniform shirt (see photo for new version – it has a red fleur‐de‐lis and BSA embroidered on the right pocket area)
- Starter Patches
-
- USA FLAG (might already be affixed to some shirts.)
- World crest emblem
- Atlanta Area Council Strip
-
- Olive green “shoulder loops” ‐ ribbons that go on the epaulets.
- Neckerchief “slide” (see illustration below)
- Olive green Scout socks – one pair (there are various heights – pick what you like)
-
-
- Buy extra if you want 2‐3 pairs for a weekend campout
-
-
- Scout belt (this may be included if you purchase official BSA pants)
-
-
- Shirts are worn tucked in, so a belt is needed.
-
-
- Olive green bottoms (shorts, pants). Choose BSA pants (shorts, zip‐off pants/shorts)
- Male Scouts BSA Handbook (new version with male pronouns, photos, etc.)
Optional
- Scout hat
- Centennial ring that goes around the blue fluer‐de‐lis. (Messenger of Peace ring may be earned later.)
Items Provided by Troop
- Neckerchief
- Unit Numerals
- Patrol Emblem (after patrol is assigned)
- Badge of Rank (after it is earned)
The patch placement guide is located here
The troop also has a small number of previously used scouting gear and clothing you are welcome to look through to see if anything fits your new scout.
