Boy Scout Troop 608, located in Suwanee, GA believes that scouting is a journey. A scout makes their own journey and can take them down many paths. The scouting program encourages youth to try many different skills in a safe environment as they work on rank advancements and merit badges. It gives youth a safe place to develop their skills and push themselves to reach new heights. Our troop has a strong history of developing boys into well-rounded young men who are active in their community and are leaders amongst their peers.
Sine 1909, the scouting movement has been focused on the development of youth to make moral and ethical decisions throughout their lives. Scouting helps its members through the development of leadership skills, outdoor skills, and interpersonal skills by providing numerous opportunities to build confidence with practical experience. Troop 608 follows the scouting philosophy of a scout-led program. That means the scouts make the decisions on what they want to do, the experiences they wish to have, who their youth leaders are, and how they advance.
Adult Leadership
Troop 608 has a strong collection of adult leaders who help guide these decisions and make sure the activities the troop selects are within scouting guidelines. We have a high percentage of leaders who are Wood Badge trained and a very active adult committee who all help in providing a superior scouting experience for our members.

Activities
Weekend Camps
The troop tries to camp locally once a month. We have dozens of camping opportunities within a couple of hours drive of Atlanta, and we like to visit as many as we can.
Summer Camps
Each year, the troop will send a contingent to at least one Scouts BSA summer camp programs. Woodruff Scout Camp and Bert Adams Scout Camp are just a couple.
High Adventure
Whether it is Sea Base, Philmont, Summit Bechtel Reserve, or Northern Tier, we like to do them all.
Service
Giving back to the community is another adventure. The troop encourages scouts of all ages to be involved in their communities and give back in any way they can.

Every Scout Deserves a Trained Leader
If you had a magic wand, would you use it to make the Scouting program better and more fun for youth so they stayed in Scouting longer, so it had a larger impact on their lives? What if the same magic wand made leadership roles easier, more rewarding, and led to better retention among adult leaders? Would using that magic wand be a top priority?
Well, such a magic wand does exist—in the form of the learning programs for leaders in Scouting.
Common sense tells us that training is important, and research shows the importance of trained leaders. A trained leader is knowledgeable and more confident in the role being performed. Trained leaders exhibit a knowledge and confidence that is picked up by people around them. Trained leaders impact the quality of programs, leader tenure, youth tenure, safety, and a lot more. A trained leader is better prepared to make the Scouting program all it can be!
Introduction to Leadership Skills for Troops
Introduction to Leadership Skills teaches Scouts with leadership positions about their new roles and how to most effectively reach success in that role. It is intended to help Scouts in leadership positions within their unit understand their responsibilities and to equip them with organizational and leadership skills to fulfill those responsibilities.
National Youth Leadership Training
National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.
National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience
National Advanced Youth Leadership Experience is an exciting program that enhances leadership skills and expands upon the team-building and ethical decision-making skills learned in National Youth Leadership Training. NAYLE emphasizes leadership, teamwork, and selfless service, using the core elements of NYLT to help youth strengthen these skills. The NAYLE course is now available at all four national high-adventure bases. The material presented is basically the same at all four venues but is specific to the unique environment of each site.
Youth Protection | Adult Training
True youth protection can be achieved only through the focused commitment of everyone in Scouting. It is the mission of Youth Protection volunteers and professionals to work within the Boy Scouts of America to maintain a culture of Youth Protection awareness and safety at the national, territory, area, council, district, and unit levels.
Position-Specific Courses
These instructor-led courses are designed to help Scouters learn how to effectively carry out their Scouting roles. In most cases, completing the course will make a Scouter “trained” for the role(s) covered in the course. E-learning versions of some courses may be found below in the E-learning section.
Wood Badge | Adult Training
Every Scout deserves a well-trained leader. Are you that leader? Get Wood Badge trained and you will be! In doing so, you will change not only your life but also the lives of the youth you lead. In 2022, the Atlanta Area Council BSA will offer three Wood Badge courses. Participants are required to attend all days a specific course is being held.
Powder Horn
Powder Horn is a training opportunity designed to introduce scout leaders at all levels and older scouts to program possibilities and resources necessary to operate a successful Adventure Program in their unit.
It is important to understand that Powder Horn is not a personal development course or a team-building experience. Its purpose is to educate the youth and adult Scouting leaders about specific adventure skills, to connect them to resources to deliver those skills and to get them excited about delivering those skills in an exciting, challenging way to youth.
